Jp 104    Getting the Most out of Photographs
       John Passaro, Instructor

Workshop size limited to eight
Monday and Tuesday dates to be determined
         9:30 am - 4:30 pm each day     $60 each day ($120 total)
We will begin with exploring the unique qualities of photographs versus paintings and a brief history of artists using photographs for their work (like Eakins and Degas), however beyond and initial orientation it's a hands-on workshop where we all participate.

We usually work with oil painters, but this could really be for any medium.

I know that sometimes it's almost impossible for us, me included, to work outdoors, on-the-spot -- so just about all of us take pictures and rely on them to help us back in the studio. I might be driving and see a sky I am attracted to, for instance, and about the only thing I can do at the time is take a quick picture and make some mental notes. It isn't ideal, but it can work very well.

There definitely are some ways to get the most out of the photographs we use as the basis for paintings, and I'd like to show you what I've learned about this.

We will thoroughly explore each step in the process, and you are asked to bring some pictures to work with, preferably landscapes, but if you have something else you want to work on, bring it. Bring a small canvas or panel, say 8"x10" or 9"x12", and a larger one that matches the proportions, say 16"x20" or 18"x24".

As always, we will work on paintings during the workshop, in this case based on your pictures, so bring an easel.

Call for a supply list, or you may purchase a supply kit, including panels and canvas, designed specifically for this workshop for an additional $120 (a $185 retail value).

Jp 204    For Oil Painters Only - The Art of Seeing and Mixing Color
       John Passaro, Instructor
          Workshop size limited to eight

Monday and Tuesday dates to be determined   9:30 am - 4:30 pm   $120
Tuesday dates to be determined    9:30 am - 4:30 pm      $60

Learn to interpret the limitless array of light and color in nature using our limited painting materials. We begin with the understanding that color is about color relationships - during the first half of the day, we explore the various approaches to handling relationships, from the subdued to the wild. The second half of the day is devoted to coming to terms with oil paint, including the understanding that there are no pure colors. When you mix two oil colors together, you are mixing really at least four, and sometimes more depending on the ingredients.
If you have attended this workshop before, we will build on and refine what you've learned since then. We'd really like to make learning a building experience.
Bring your own personal favorite tubes of paint and we'll explore a wider range of oil painting colors

Jp205     White to Black: It's All About Values
       John Passaro, Instructor
          Workshop size limited to eight
Tuesday dates to be determined    9:30 am - 4:30 pm      $60
This is a workshop for artists of all kinds...watercolorists, pastelists, oil painters, pen and ink artists, or simply artist who love to draw.
Long before the human eye sees color, we instinctively process values. Our very survival depends on our ability to see values. Without being aware of it, when people look at your artwork they sense the strength of your value relationships before they see color or subject matter.
Our workshop time will be allocated in three parts: (1) Learn to create and use the range of values in your medium of choice; (2) Learn to see values in the world around us - visually speaking, that is; and (3) Learn to compose using black and white only.
As mentioned above, if you have attended this workshop before, we will build on and refine what you've learned since then. We'd really like to make learning the principles of the artistic language a building experience.
Supply list: bring paper, panels, or canvas and plenty of white and plenty of black.
